EurOcean is the European broker of ocean science and technology. Founded in 2002, EurOcean (the European Centre for Information on Marine Science and Technology) is an independent, non-profit, scientific organisation. EurOcean aims to support European marine science and technology advances by fostering information exchange, cooperation and collaboration among its members, the ocean community and society.

EurOcean main areas of expertise are information management, knowledge transfer, science communication, ocean literacy, public engagement, policy support, research infrastructures and funding programmes. EurOcean experience comprises the management of public databases, organization of events, dissemination of information, participation on research projects and provision of services to its members and to external organizations.

EurOcean has two types of members. Full members are public or non-profit European marine research, innovation and entrepreneurship, funding and outreach organisations. Cooperating members are organisations with a regional or global reach, involved in activities complementary to those of EurOcean.

Full Members are in 10 European countries and have outstanding expertise, technology and experience. They count with reputed experts in many key fields such as Biodiversity, Aquaculture, Renewable Energies and Climate Change, among other. Their technology comprises 135 marine research infrastructures. Their experience includes the participation, over the last decade, in over 250 projects of the European Commission Research Framework Programmes.
Full Members research interests vary over time. Presently, they are highly committed in topics such as Blue Biotechnology, Plastics and Noise Pollution, Sensors and Sensing, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Circular Economy, Autonomous Vehicles, Youth Engagement and many others.

EurOcean is presently looking for a Marketing and Communication Expert, as follows:


  • Develop and implement EurOcean marketing and communication strategic plan
  • Handle EurOcean’s public relations
  • Create opportunities for EurOcean, its members and partners
  • Build consortia and develop proposals
  • Collaborate in other EurOcean activities

Eligibility and selection criteria


  • Degree (minimum 3 years) in Marketing and Communication or in related and relevant field
  • Up to 4 years of relevant experience for the position
  • Experience working in international environments
  • Experience in project management
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Excellent command of English
  • Good judgment and an ability to solve problems quickly and effectively
  • Proficient in office software (e.g. Microsoft Office 365)
  • Citizen of a European Union country


  • Experience with European stakeholders of ocean science and technology
  • Experience with the European media
  • Experience in European funded research projects
  • Certification in project management (e.g. PMBoK)

Employment Conditions

  • The position will be filled as soon as possible. Starting date to be negotiated
  • The position is offered for a minimum period of 1 year
  • The work is to be performed in Lisbon and the job may involve travel, mainly in Europe
  • The gross monthly salary will be proposed based on relevant experience demonstrated and will be subject to statutory deductions and contributions, according to the Portuguese law

Selection procedure

  • The Selection Committee is composed of the Executive Director of EurOcean and two other members from the EurOcean Centre.
  • The Selection Committee evaluates the applications and establishes a shortlist of candidates.
  • Candidates who are selected for interview shall be informed by 8th January, 2020. Selected candidates should be interviewed between January 11th to 15th.
