Algae: technical webinar and Position Paper
EABA is bring together stakeholders for knowledge exchange and collaboration on seaweed valorisation.

As reported by EurOcean Member SUBMARINER Network, the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) aims to promote a strong link between science, technology and business in the algae biomass sector. Seaweed cultivation for multiple purposes is very relevant for the algae biomass sector. It is very relevant to bring together the main stakeholders for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

The technical webinar seaweed valorisation: from production to applications has a compact format with a panel- based organization. Each panel has a specific topic and a duration of approximately 1 hour; 20 minutes for the presentation of the topic and 40 minutes for discussion and conclusions. Each panel has a reference topic and the participants in the panel will be volunteers from the participant group. All the participants will have the opportunity to present and ask questions following the workshop format. There will be minutes or summary from the event with the key conclusions for each panel.

At the same time, algae have become a multi-billion sector in terms of biotechnology development that is expected to grow rapidly, providing valuable goods and services in multiple applications. In spite of centuries of scientific and commercial interests, the term algae has no taxonomic meaning. In the light of rapidly growing business interests associated with the term algae, a clear, simple definition of algae is not only required, but essential for developing the necessary standards, regulatory and legal issues.

This paper aims to explain 'what are algae' and how to answer the most relevant questions to different players interested in the field, including: academia, industry, trade organizations, consumers, business investors, local, national authorities, international organizations, and any other interested parties or stakeholders. This position paper represents the position of EABA as the Algae Biomass sector Association from a European perspective and summarizes information from science, technology, and business dealing with 'algae' biomass, biotechnology, and bioproducts.
