Launching AQUA-LIT, the brand new project for fighting marine litter
Project started in January 2019 and will have a duration of two years.

New Year, new projects! EurOcean is now busy working in the new exciting project AQUA-LIT, preventive measures for averting the discarding of litter in the marine environment from the aquaculture industry, just started in January 2019. AQUA-LIT, funded by the EU program EASME-EMFF, is a two years ambitious project which gathers together seven partners from Hungary, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, France and Germany. Five of them already Members of the EurOcean network.

Considering that aquaculture is the fastest growing food-producing sector with an expansion rate of 8% per year, it is now the time to work with the aquaculture industry to prevent an increase in marine littering from aquaculture activities and to support the removal of already existing marine litter. In line with the new EU Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy, AQUA-LIT will provide the aquaculture sector with a sustainable toolbox of innovative ideas and methodologies to address the three main components to tackle marine littering:

  • prevention & reduction
  • monitoring & quantification
  • removal & recycling

AQUA-LIT aims to:

  • Understand better how aquaculture activities are littering the Ocean through monitoring and quantification frameworks,
  • Provide littering preventive measures that help reduce the input of litter from the aquaculture industry,
  • Provide mechanisms that help reduce the existing marine debris coming from aquaculture activities,
  • Provide solutions for recycling the collected plastic waste, aiming towards a more circular economy, and
  • Examine what policies need to be adapted or put in place to underpin these practical actions.

AQUA-LIT will work face-to-face with stakeholders of the whole aquaculture value chain, organising meetings, webinars and Learning Labs in three European basins: the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

By co-working with aquaculture farmers, identifying and clustering existing, upcoming and already implemented tools to prevent marine littering, and by creating a platform that helps all the stakeholders from the aquaculture chain to increase the understanding, awareness and availability of solutions, a potential transformation of the aquaculture sector towards a less polluting sector becomes possible.

The AQUA-LIT project is coordinated by Geonardo, based in Budapest, Hungary. The consortium is composed by:

EurOcean will lead WP5 “Scaling up the tide” on developing policy recommendation for less litter, transferring outcomes to the Outermost regions (Azores and Canaries Islands) and building the legacy of the project. EurOcean will also have a crucial role in the Dissemination and Outreach tasks, in supporting Learning Labs development and in the data collection through its database Knowledge Gate.

Aqua-lit kick-off meeting took place on 21 and 22 January 2019 in the snowy Budapest. The Team has its action plan ready to go!
