New Center for Coastal and Marine Studies in Bulgaria
CCMS will play an active role to achieve various aims related to the Black Sea.

The Centre for Coastal and Marine Studies (CCMS) is a research foundation, non-governmental and non-profit organization established in March 2018 in Varna, Bulgaria, on the Black Sea coast. CCMS has the fundamental goal of developing and promoting science, research, knowledge transfer and innovation technologies in the Black Sea and the World Ocean by bringing together science, environment, expertise, stakeholders and policy making. CCMS is directly advised by Advisory Committee (AC), which currently involves twelve distinguished members from different institutes, universities and organizations.

CCMS Mission

CCMS will play an active role to achieve the following aims:

  • Contribute to exploration and protection of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, marine space of the Black Sea, living and non-living resources.
  • Work to study and protect Black Sea Basin natural and historical heritage Promote sustainable and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and marine spatial planning (MSP) of the Black Sea Basin.
  • Conduct research and assessment of natural and human-induced risks in the coastal and marine zones, such as coastal erosion, landslides, sea level rise, flooding, human structure impacts, environmental risks and other activities, to raise the public awareness.
  • Carry out activities for conservation and restoration of the environment.
  • Explore trends of marine and coastal tourism and their impact on sustainable coastal zone development and economy of the Black Sea and the World Ocean.
  • Conduct exchange, partnership and training between institutions, universities, scientific organizations, non-governmental organizations, establish international cooperation.

CCMS Activities

Coastal and Marine Research

CCMS conducts studies and surveys in the field of modern coastal and marine processes, among the main are:

  • Research and monitoring of coastal sand dunes and beaches.
  • Assessing the impact of port and coastal defense structures on the coastal zone and marine space and accompanying processes.
  • Development and maintenance of geodatabases, coastal and marine mapping and application of Geographic Information System (GIS) to coastal and marine studies.
  • Use of remote sense methods and new technologies for exploration and monitoring of the coastal zone and the marine space.
  • Assessing the sensitivity of coastal areas to oil spills and other pollutants.
  • Developing and implementing innovative methods for the analysis and management of beach and marine litters.

Coastal and Marine Strategies

  • CCMS develops and examines scientific basis for sustainable coastal development and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).
  • By developing programs and strategies, CCMS advocates for the implementation of the European Union (EU) Integrated Maritime Policy, Blue Growth Strategy, Concept for Circular Economy, Marine Innovations Project and other EU strategies and concepts.
  • Elaborating scientific basis and expertise to support implementation of Directive 2014/89/ of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 for establishing a framework for Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).

Project development, knowledge transfer, networking and consultancy

  • Development and coordination of research and management of national, EU and other projects.
  • CCMS promotes knowledge transfer on a national and worldwide scale.  CCMS conducts educational, publishing and editorial activities in the field of coastal and marine science.
  • CCMS experts are experienced in organizing seminars, thematic workshops, round-tables, conferences, trainings or other events to promote project results and inform different stakeholders.
  • CCMS has established a large network of contacts with related Bulgarian, EU and international organizations.
  • Link and cooperate with industry on a national and international scale. The CCMS AC members are distinguished scientists, researchers and experts from other institutions worldwide, having large experience in both coastal/marine science and management. The membership in the CCMS AC is honorable by invitation and it currently involves twelve prominent members.
