Bringing the Ocean to Society
1 Jun 2017
First MARINA International Conference on Responsible Research and Innovation
The event will bring together marine stakeholders and RRI practitioners from all over Europe in Rome on 25 and 26 September 2017.

The H2020 funded MARINA project, in which Eurocean participates, is organising an international conference focussed on responsible research and innovation this coming September in Rome.

The concept of  Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is relatively recent and it is part of the Europe 2020 strategy. Its objective is to promote a common vision for stronger collaboration among social, natural and physical scientists, societal actors and citizens in order to achieve a more comprehensive and inclusive vision of science and innovation and improve the role of society in environmental conservation. Many European initiatives in different domains already started to address RRI principles and the wide discussion arising requires a systematic sharing of information and knowledge among all stakeholders.

Within the marine sphere, RRI is being implemented in Europe through initiatives like the H2020 MARINA project which since 2016 is promoting the creation of a trans-European stakeholders’ community to discuss case studies and experiences on the six RRI principles:

  • Public engagement
  • Gender equality
  • Science education
  • Open science
  • Ethics
  • New governance models based in the five previous principles

The International Conference on Responsible Research and Innovation in Science, Innovation and Society (RRI-SIS2017) will be the first conference of MARINA to present and discuss the results of the ongoing implementation of RRI to marine issues in Europe.

The conference will contribute to foster the creation of a RRI marine community involving scientists, societal actors, policy makers, entrepreneurs and citizens. This group of stakeholders will discuss best practices of working together during the whole research and innovation process – from funding planning to science outreach - in order to fully implement each of the RRI principles.
