EurOcean contributed to plan the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
The strategy focuses on enhancing information sharing, communication, cooperation and collaboration among ocean’s stakeholders - EurOcean's raison d'être.

EurOcean's Executive Director, Sérgio Bryton, participated in the Arctic Ocean Decade Workshop, on March 29th, in Tromso, Norway. The purpose of this workshop, organized by the Research Council of Norway and Arctic Frontiers, was to contribute to the planning of the United Nations’ Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 - 2030).

Besides the distinguished presence of Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of Unesco (EurOcean Cooperating Member), the workshop counted also with participants from 16 countries (11 EU member states), the European Commission (DG MARE) and other notable governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The discussions were focused on the Arctic and on Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) of UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Topics discussed included: 1) A clean, healthy and resilient Arctic ocean; 2) A predictable ocean; and 3) A sustainably harvested and productive ocean.

Suggestions to move forward include enhancing information sharing, communication, cooperation and collaboration among ocean’s stakeholders - EurOcean's raison d'être.

EurOcean is very proud for having been invited to participate in such relevant work and fully supports the UN Ocean Decade. We look forward to developing and participating in other initiatives that enable achieving the objectives of SDG14.
