Use of high resolution satellites in coastal zone management
EurOcean Member CESAM upgrades its coastal morphodynamics research.

Since January 2019, CESAM is part of the European project SPORE - SPACE for SHORE consortium. The project analyses about 1000 km of coastline, spread over five Member States (Germany, France, Greece, Romania and Portugal) and five pilot zones. The main objective of the project is to collect coastal morphodynamics indicators, such as shoreline position and beach width according to the latest accuracy requirements defined by the European Commission and by each Member State.

Over the last few decades the main source of data on coastal morphodynamics have been supported by traditional solutions, namely in-situ methods of acquiring topographical and bathymetric information. However, developments in Earth observation programs open new perspectives on the quality of high-resolution satellite observations in radar and optical domains.
