Report on the Macaronesian seabirds, marine mammals and sea turtles available
Learn more about the pressures and risks experienced by marine wildlife and what are the management priorities to overcome them.

The final meeting of the MISTIC SEAS 2 project - Applying a sub-regional coherent and coordinated approach to the monitoring and assessment of marine biodiversity in Macaronesia for the second cycle of the MSFD - was held in the first quarter of 2019 in Madrid. This meeting was organized by the EurOcean Member Azorean Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT), who acted as coordinator of the project.

During the meeting, partners had the opportunity to present the project results, in particular the Macaronesian Roof Report (MRR) and Risk Assessment, as well as discuss their perspectives on the contribution of MISTIC SEAS 2 to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

The MRR is one of the most important deliverables of MISTIC SEAS 2 and includes the description of the criteria and the species evaluated; the compilation of results obtained during the implementation of pilot MSFD monitoring programs for seabirds, mammals and sea turtles in the three Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands) and additional data available from other monitoring projects or programs.

The Risk Assessment document will also be an essential tool for future decision-making steps within the framework of the MSFD, in particular in the development of monitoring and evaluation programs. A methodology of analysis was defined to allow the identification and prioritization of the risks associated to the most relevant pressures on birds, mammals and reptiles. Therefore, it serves to identify the most needed and urgent management actions within Macaronesia.

MISTIC SEAS 3 was launched as a new project in March 2019 and follows the work carried out on MISTIC SEAS 1 and 2. FRCT is once again the coordinator.
